This is how I used to try to blow up balloons when I was little! Good thing all those VHS tapes are lost in the deep abyss of my parents' storage unit.

I'm glad you found it valuable, Greg! I think for me it was always about focusing on one step at a time, but keeping in mind where you'd ultimately like to be. And that may change on your way to getting there, but make sure each step you make is in line with where you want to go and you can't go wrong. :)

Great post, Sarah! Though I am only at the college-to-career transition of my PR journey — on the verge of it, that is; I graduate in May — I can't help but ponder the next stage of career development. I know my primary focus should be on that first transition, so as to not get ahead of myself, but it would folly not to look ahead to the next step (think bigger, right?).

Thanks for an insightful post — it gives me a clearer view of the big picture.

Thanks, Taylor! Great point! No risk, no reward, right? You can't be afraid, hide from what may seem hard or uncomfortable, and end up playing it too safe. You won't get anywhere new. :)

Sarah, I think you really hit on the important aspects of moving up professionally. I can remember thinking about all of these different moving parts and feeling completely overwhelmed. It was only when these things started to come into focus and finally appear manageable that it was a realistic goal to move forward. Good post!

I think something else to add would be to constantly remind yourself that your client's GREAT success can sometimes hinge on whether or not you decide to try something new, learn from the experts or go the extra mile. Though these things are sometimes hard to get into the habit of doing, it's almost always worth the effort in the long run.

Agreed! These are great recommendations for any young PR pro looking to advance their career and work toward leading larger accounts on their own.
