I know what you’re thinking…not another 2011 recap post highlighting the PR blunders from the past year. No worries! This post will explore the bad AND the good.

Let’s start by taking a look at the positive stories from 2011 — those rare moments that captivated the attention of the nation (and, in some cases, the world) for the better. In an era when people naturally gravitate toward the plethora of negative news out there, these five memorable moments were a breath of fresh air:

I was lucky enough to attend TEDxDetroit with my teammates Nikki Little and Tom Nixon this past Wednesday. After a day full of tales of out-of-the-box thinking and entrepreneurial success, I wanted to share with you three presentations that I just can’t get off my mind.

My hope is that, after reading this, you too will be inspired to tackle an idea and watch it grow into something beautiful. An idea is always at the epicenter of entrepreneurial success. It’s whether we choose to act on it and surround ourselves with smart people with a common goal that we can really begin to make a difference.

In the first initiative of Identity’s 2011 charitable giving campaign, the Identity team devoted a day to volunteering at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit. Team members packed groceries and hung clothes in the warehouse before taking a tour of The Heidelberg Project, eating lunch with guests of Capuchin and experiencing a different side of Detroit.

South By Southwest Interactive (SXSWi) is one of those events I’ve been hearing about for years and wondering when I would get my chance to experience it firsthand. Luckily, opportunity came knocking this year.

The Chevrolet team asked me to participate in its second annual SXSWi road trip challenge, and I humbly accepted. I couldn’t have asked for a better team (we choose the name Team Motown to properly represent our Detroit heritage). While the road trip was exhausting, spending three days creating content on the fly was a challenging and rewarding experience. I had so much fun!
